Indiana Dunes: a one-day itinerary & the best hikes

Staying at Searko Retreats puts you ten minutes from Indiana Dunes National Park. Here is exactly how we'd spend your first full day — plus the trails locals actually recommend.

One perfect day in the Dunes

  1. 8:00 AM

    Coffee & breakfast in Porter

Grab coffee and a pastry on your way out the door — the retreat is 10 minutes from the park entrance.

  2. 9:00 AM

    Sunrise stroll at West Beach

Beat the crowds. Walk the Dune Succession Trail loop before the parking lot fills up (~$25/vehicle entry, free with America the Beautiful pass).

  3. 11:00 AM

    Indiana Dunes Visitor Center

Pick up a map, stamp your National Parks Passport, and let the kids run the short Calumet Dune trail behind the center.

  4. 12:15 PM

Lunch in Porter or Beverly Shores

Try The Original George's Gyros Spot in Porter for gyros and Greek favorites, or Lucrezia in downtown Porter for Italian.

  5. 2:00 PM

    3 Dune Challenge

Drive 10 minutes to Indiana Dunes State Park and conquer the three biggest dunes. Reward yourself with a Lake Michigan swim at the bottom.

  6. 5:00 PM

    Sunset at Kemil Beach

Quieter than the main beach. Pack a blanket and snacks — the western horizon over the lake is the showstopper.

  7. 7:30 PM

Dinner & dessert back in Porter

Wood-fired pizza at Bartlett's or ice cream at Valpo Velvet (a 20-minute drive south). Back at the retreat by 9.
