The Best Indiana Dunes Beaches: A Local's Guide
Indiana Dunes National Park has four very different beaches along a fifteen-mile stretch of Lake Michigan. They are not interchangeable. Here is how to pick the right Indiana Dunes beach for your day — written from a retreat ten minutes away.
West Beach
Big, classic dune beach with a swim area and bath house
- Parking
- Large paved lot — $6 entry fee in season, fills by 11am on summer weekends
- Boardwalk access
- Long boardwalk over the dunes; pair with the 3.4 mi West Beach loop
- Sunset quality
- Excellent — west-facing point with unobstructed Lake Michigan horizon
- Best for
- Families who want lifeguards, restrooms, and a real swim day
If you're visiting the Indiana Dunes beach for the first time, this is the safe pick. Real facilities, real lifeguards, and the only beach on the lakeshore with showers.
Porter Beach
Quiet residential beach two minutes from downtown Porter
- Parking
- Free street parking; tiny lot — arrive before 10am on weekends
- Boardwalk access
- Short wood stairway down a steep dune; not stroller-friendly
- Sunset quality
- Soft and uncrowded — locals' favorite for a sunset glass of wine
- Best for
- Guests staying nearby who want to walk in for an early swim
Closest beach to our retreat. Skip the entry line at the State Park, walk over with a towel, and be back for dinner.
Kemil Beach
Calm, narrow strip of sand backed by tall wooded dunes
- Parking
- Small free lot off Kemil Road — fills mid-morning
- Boardwalk access
- Easy flat path from lot to sand — best accessibility of the four
- Sunset quality
- Pretty, with dune silhouettes; less sky than West Beach
- Best for
- Couples and anyone who wants a peaceful Indiana Dunes beach day
The local secret. Almost never crowded, and the dune backdrop makes every photo look like a postcard.
Central Beach
Wild, undeveloped, the most dramatic dune wall in the park
- Parking
- Small paved lot at the end of Central Ave — limited capacity
- Boardwalk access
- Steep stairway and sand walk — not for strollers or limited mobility
- Sunset quality
- The best sunset spot in the park, hands down
- Best for
- Photographers, hikers, sunset chasers
If you only see one Indiana Dunes beach at golden hour, make it this one. Climb left along the shoreline for the view you've seen on Instagram.
